Giant of Percussion

World renowned percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie performs with the greatest orchestras and performers around the world and is a double Grammy Award winner and Bafta nominee.

Her collection of more than 2000 percussion instruments includes one that is unique to Ulster – a Lambeg drum.

When the Ulster-Scots Agency heard that Dame Evelyn’s drum was unplayable because of a torn head we wanted to have it repaired. With the help of Third Street Studios and the Centenary Drumming Club based in County Armagh, the drum was transported to Northern Ireland from Cambridgeshire in England and was treated to a pair of new heads.

It was shipped back to Evelyn in time for Richard Hanna, Director of Education and Language in the Ulster-Scots Agency to have a conversation with her about how she came to own a Lambeg and what it means to her to have it in her collection.
